Homework Policy
READING- please just read with your child at home. I do
send home little books that focus on the sound or sight words we are learning
that week, but PLEASE read for fun in addition to this book. My
biggest job as a first grade teacher is to help your student fall in love with
reading. There are so many studies out showing that any forced reading can
actually lead to students not wanting to read or only reading for the required
time. So, please don't set the timer, just read to your child, have them
read to you, act out a favorite book, discuss books as a family, read a chapter
book a little at a time (always stopping at an exciting point to build
anticipation), etc. I do keep a reading log in their folder but this is more for my
information and to see if anyone needs some extra reading time at school.
MATH- I
will send home a math game at the beginning of each unit. It is
usually a hand out with a note to families explaining what skills we are
working on at the time. The game is on the inside pages. Please have fun playing this
math game with your students. I also send home worksheets we have worked on as
a class. Sometimes we don't finish all the problems. If
you see a paper come home with unanswered questions, feel free to work with
your child to finish those. I had two sons who
really disliked any sort of homework and one
daughter who asked for more homework starting in preschool. If
your student would like homework, please let me know and I can certainly send
home some sheets for them to work on.
First grade
students need to have MATH FACTS with sums up to 20 memorized by the end of the year. This
simply means they need to be able to add and subtract numbers up to 10. (10+10 and 20-10)
I am
sending home flashcards for you to cut and keep so you can work on these facts
as we learn them. Just a few minutes a night will help your child recall these facts
with automaticity.
